at the Section meeting, Richard reserved February 24 for the dinner at
the Hanover Manor, 16 Eagle Rock Ave. E. Hanover, NJ, (phone:
973-992-7425).
We must decide
whether to continue giving scholarships, in view of diminishing stipends
from ASME headquarters.
As promised at
the Section Meeting, Sid asked Art Vasky if he will be the keynote
speaker, speaking on the topic of fuel and what engineers need to know
about energy. Art is an energy consultant who has given lectures on the
subject. Subsequently, Art said he would be honored.
He will need a projector which can project from a Laptop PC.
The
proposed brainstorming session for program planning will be held sometime
next year.
Richard did
not have the time to send out a letter of invitation to that meeting.
Meanwhile, some planning will be done at the next Section meeting.
This will especially include planning for our Engineers Week Dinner.
Sid said he is
willing to coordinate the a brainstorming meeting, but he needs to be
able contact our membership through the internet.
Lisa asked
Richard to arrange to have him authorized to have access to the
membership list.
Although the
brainstorming session has been postponed, several members emailed Sid,
responding to the attached proposed list of programs:

Said that engineers need to know more about finance and attracting
capital.
“It ain’t rocket science”.
Rebuilding Together:
Lisa’s request
for volunteers for Rebuilding Together in Mahwah attracted some interest
by FDU students but not enough for participation until April, 2006.
Wine
Tasting/wine making Program, November 1, 2005
Lisa said that
15 people attended the program at Wine Making Plus NJ.
Those who attended had a great time. Crushed grapes were pressed. Yeast,
and sulphates were added to the pressed product and put into a barrel to
ferment for 8 months. Two married couples expressed interest in buying a
portion of the wine produced in the barrel. The residue from crushing,
not going into the barrel is used to make Moustalevria, a desert. Lisa
said that we ought to support local industry.
Few people are
aware that a local industry like this is right in our back yard.
Sterling
Mine/Fall Foliage Program October 30, 2005
10 people
showed up. Although foliage had not quite peaked, it was a gorgeous day.
Lisa said that There was a magnificent display, funded by the Oreck Co.
(vacuum cleaner manufacturer).
Black light was shone on minerals, causing them to glow in beautiful
colors. Some rocks looked like expensive gems. Visitors are allowed to
pick through the ore dump to take home spectacular samples.
A small fee (like a dollar) is charged for each selected specimen.
Other
possible programs Lisa is looking into:
-
Participating
in Habitat for Humanity during weekday evenings.
-
Visit to the
Meadowlands pumping station.
-
Website Design
classes
Reference: Gregg Festa gave a 4 session class at the Ramsey Adult
School, office located in the Ramsey High School (201)327-2025. Sid took
the class but needs a refresher. 4 sessions were not really enough.
Visit to
Morris Museum:
Bud Foster is
willing to arrange a group visit.
The museum has sections of special interest to ASME members.
-
Mechanical
musical instrument and music box collection well displayed with audio
visual presentations.
-
Mineral

-
A model train

Plus many
other collections of American Indian artifacts, dolls, fine arts, and a
special children’s section.
