Will be on
January 18th at 7:30pm.
Address of Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)
1000 River Road
Muscarelle building
Directions:
FDU is along side of route 4, on the east side of the Hackensack River.
To get to the FDU parking lot you must turn off River Road. Iif you are
on River Road, make a turn at the West bound side of route 4 to get in
the parking lot. Bear to the right and loop around under route 4 to get
to the other side of the highway.
If you are on
route 4, going east, take the River Road exit. A sharp right goes to the
parking lot. Go to the end of the parking lot, heading away from route 4
bearing to the right. At the far end of the lot (south), go up the
stairway that has 3 landings.
The Muscarelle
building is at the top of the stairs. It is a brown building.
The building has its name on the wall, visible from the top of the
stairs.
If you are on
route 4, going west, exit at River Road.
In the future
we will consider meeting at Kraft, in Fairfield, or at the FDU campus -
Madison/Florham Park.
Engineers
Week Dinner – February 24
At the Hanover
Manor, 16 Eagle Rock Ave. E. Hanover, NJ, (phone: 973-992-7425).
Art Vatsky
will be the keynote speaker. He will address “Transportation Energy, The
Real World”.
Richard
recommended that we provide a small discount on the cost of the dinner
for student members and faculty advisors. He would like to keep the cost
of attendance as close as possible to last year’s cost.
Richard will
send an email announcing a Committee meeting for planning the Dinner
event. Thus far, Committee volunteers include Bud Foster, Lisa Laplante,
Dick Touma, Boris Khusid, Karen Ohland, and Sid Goodman.
In the past,
we gave scholarship monetary awards to students at the Engineers Week
Dinner. These awards consumed the bulk of our Section stipend from ASME
headquarters. Headquarters has drastically diminished stipends, and will
likely eliminate them entirely. During the past five years, when we
awarded scholarships we only received one thank you note from a
recipient. Most student members broke association with ASME after
graduation. In view of reduced resources, we cannot afford to continue
as we did before. For the limited funds which remain, It may be better
to restrict awards for special programs, such as competitions. It was
agreed that we should ask for advice from Harry Kountouras. Harry is the
Faculty Advisor for the ASME Student Chapter at NJIT. Also, we should
look into providing seminars at which we can award a continuing
education credits and charge a fee.
Richard
Dolinsky pointed out that New York State has adopted codes which require
continuing education credits.
New Jersey is not a State which requires codes, such as the ASME Boiler
and Pressure Vessel Codes.
He urged that we should lobby New Jersey so that it becomes a coded
State. He knew five men who were killed because of the lack of checking
by qualified engineers. Seminars offered by the Section will not only
provide members with critical skills, but they can provide funds that
will enable our support of special programs. As Richard Touma pointed
out in previous meetings, we need to provide information that members
will find useful on their jobs.
Such information is most effective when imparted face to face.
A
brainstorming session for program planning will be held in March:
We have plenty
of ideas for programs. The purpose of the brainstorming session will be
to establish active participation by members in launching programs which
have the most appeal.
Our entire North Jersey membership will be invited to the session.
Richard,
Dolinsky will send an e-mail announcing a Committee meeting for
launching the session.
Thus far, volunteers for planning this session include Dick Touma, Bruce
Storms, Boris Khusid, and Sid Goodman.
Richard
presented a rating of interests favored by Essex/Hudson ASME members.
This data came
from the ASME membership form. The form asks member interests, both
technical and general. Richard said he will try to assembly a similar
rating from ASME student member data.
Bruce
Eckman: QC engineer - (908)232-8900 office, (908)528-3286 cell
phone He expressed willingness to present talks on the following
subjects.
-The role of mechanical engineers in quality assurance.
-GMP aspects of clean pharmaceutical facilities from the point of view
of a designer/constructor.
-Commissioning.
Based on rating of program interests mentioned above, Sid will ask Bruce
if he can present a seminar on project and program management in the
month of March.
If it involves pharmaceuticals, so much the better. There is much
pharmaceutical employment in New Jersey, but very few of these employees
are members of ASME. We discussed the possibility of charging a modest
fee for the program, perhaps $10.00.
ASME
reorganization:
ASME Regions
have been replaced by Districts. Our Section is now in District A.
District A includes parts of New Jersey, New York, New England, Canada,
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
The ASME web site gives details.
Visit to
Morris Museum:
Bud Foster
will plan a group visit for the month of April .
The museum has sections which include…
-Mechanical musical instrument and music box collection well displayed
with audio visual presentations.
-Mineral collection with a fluorescence rock collection brilliantly
displayed.
-A model train layout.
-Collections of American Indian artifacts, dolls, fine arts, and a
special children’s section.
Visit to
the Edison Laboratory: (the first R&D laboratory in the nation)
Art Vatsky
wants to arrange a visit, but it will have to wait until the Laboratory
is reopened after renovations are completed.
Visit to
the the Meadowlands Pumping Station and the Paterson Falls generator:
Lisa Laplante
is interested in arranging programs for these in May. These are
activitities which require spring weather, since they are essentially
outdoor events.
Rebuilding Together:
Lisa’s has
expressed interest in attracting volunteers for Rebuilding Together
starting in April, 2006.
