Wednesday
November 18, 2009 Luncheon

Example Centrifugal Pump CFD Modeling Techniques

with

Anthony Botting
Principal
Simulation Products Manager

Texas Engineering Systems, LP.

Our speaker will show and discuss examples of developing CFD simulations for centrifugal pumps for liquid and gas. Traditional and alternate methodologies for general CFD modeling and discretization will be outlined, and some simulation modeling terms defined. We'll use SolidWorks Flow Simulation to demonstrate the examples where rotating regions are employed so that a moving mesh is not required. Rotating region boundary conditions are discussed for variations in placement relative to “stator” areas. Various output data will be shown to include driving torque and efficiency. In one case a pump performance curve development will be discussed.

A few notes about our Distinguished Speaker :

Anthony Botting worked many years on mechanical and analysis engineering in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), composite materials structural design and analysis, and aerodynamics. He worked on industry projects for TRW, Martin Marietta, Kaman Sciences Corp., and Hughes, to name a few. Much of his work focused on FEA and advanced composite materials for spacecraft structures. Anthony also worked on Navy contracts for General Dynamics in submarine nuclear weapons mechanical interface retrofitting and design. He was also employed as the Southern US Regional Technical Manager for Structural Research and Analysis Corporation (SRAC, developers of SolidWorks Simulation FEA code) for several years before founding Texas Engineering Systems.

At Texas Engineering Systems, Anthony holds certification credentials as SolidWorks Instructor and Technician, and Advanced Professional Simulation Flow Support Instructor and Technician. Anthony provides technical support, training, mentoring, and consultative services to customers for the Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis codes sold and serviced by the Company.

Anthony earned a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. He was awarded a fellowship sponsored by the US Army, where he focused on structural mechanics, finite element methods, and composite structures analysis. His thesis topic was an investigation into delamination mitigation using alternate ply-drop termination techniques for tapered composite structures for applications to helicopter rotor blades.
