3D Printing Technology Review

with

Corey A. Bower

Applications Support Specialist
Texas Engineering Systems

Processes and technology will be outlined to show advantages and disadvantages of various 3D model printing systems (typically used for rapid prototyping) characteristics, such as relative material and machine costs, machine sizes and weight considerations, fabrication time, model durability, health hazards such as noise, odors, and vibration, equipment location issues (inside offices or the need to locate in a machine shop), power requirements. Materials reviewed include powdered metals, corn starch, wax, plastics and even chocolate. A rather simple “Technology for the masses” equipment and materials approach is presented with an operational review and demonstration on how the technology is used.

Stress Concentrations & Stress Singularities

with

Glenn Sinclair

Groves-Hodge Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Louisiana State University

Stress concentrations are common failure sites in engineering. Given an accurate determination of the stress concentration factor involved together with relevant companion testing, it is possible to begin to predict such failures and so design to prevent them. Some fairly readily-applied approaches for making sufficiently accurate determinations of stress concentration factors via finite elements will be suggested.

Stress singularities likewise signal potential failure locations. Their accommodation in design procedures takes more effort. In the first instance it is essential to recognize their presence rather than mistakenly view them as a stress concentration. Thereafter, there are really but three approaches that may be adopted to try and ensure structural integrity: to dispense with any detailed stress analysis and rely on experimental testing; to apply a generalized fracture mechanics approach and take the coefficient of the singularity as the damage controlling parameter; or to improve the modeling so that the singularity is removed and physically-sensible stresses result. Various means will be put forward for recognizing stress singularities as well as for obtaining physically-sensible stresses at erstwhile singular points.

The Incarnation of Natural Strength; Titanium's History, Properties and Applications

with

Chris Caldwell, P.E.

Product Technology Manager
RTI Energy Systems

As a mechanical engineer what comes to mind when you think of titanium? An exotic “space age metal" used for spacecraft, aircraft and jet engines? Maybe an expensive "high performance metal" used on luxury sports cars, golf clubs, mountain bikes and other consumer products? Well...you're half right!

Titanium, however, is not exotic or expensive. In fact, the minerals containing titanium make up almost 25% of the earth's crust. This presentation will explore the birth of the titanium industry, where we are today and where we're heading. We'll cover titanium's mechanical properties, how to design with titanium, and review recent applications for titanium in the energy market.
