Message from the ChairSeptember 30, 2007 Hello members! My name is David Strayer and I am the new chair for our section. I would like to start off by thanking Sameer Bachani for his outstanding term as chair. His leadership and guidance lead to some outstanding professional development classes and brought academia and business closer together. Our section is highly regarded in the ASME community for its leadership, membership and fiscal responsibility. Sameer not only kept the reputation high, but really made some great strides this past year. My focus this year is on bridging the gap between academia and business. Section activities will provide professional development for engineers currently in business and assist students finishing school or working on projects. For the professional engineer, my goal is to continue the low-cost professional development classes our section is known for. Our relationships with local professors provide an excellent platform for continuing education for engineers in the field. Our past business volunteers will continue to provide quality educational experiences. If there are topics you would like to discuss or learn about, please come to a board meeting or e-mail me with your suggestions. For the engineering student, I want to bring structure and business sense to the students involved in ASME, with some help from our senior members. I am creating a formal system for requesting funding from our section for senior projects. This will give our students a true assessment of how professionals fund projects and learn basic business skills to be successful in their first job. We are looking for motivated professionals willing to mentor our future engineers into what the marketplace needs. Please take time to review the activities we have planned and sign up for them on the website. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact me or just start coming to the meetings, which are held on the first Wednesday of every month. Thank you again for your commitment to engineering excellence. David StrayerASME Oregon Section Chair 2007/2008. |
