ASME STUDENT NIGHT 2007

Hosted by the University of Rochester

Wednesday, February 7, 2007

6:30 – 8:30 pm

University of Rochester

Salon D Meliora Restaurant

Buffet Style Dinner

Guest Speaker: Dr. Riccardo Betti

Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Director of Fusion Science Center, University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics

The Quest for Controlled Thermonuclear Energy

Thermonuclear fusion is the process that powers the sun and the stars. In a fusion reaction, two nuclei of hydrogen isotopes "fuse" together to form a heavier nucleus. During this process, some of the hydrogen mass is converted into energy according to the Einstein's relation E=mc^2. Since hydrogen isotopes such as Deuterium can be easily extracted in large quantities from the ocean water, thermonuclear fuel is virtually inexhaustible. In this talk, I will describe the progress made both in the US and the world towards the quest for fusion energy.
