An Invitation to All Aviation Enthusiasts and the Public

The Rochester Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) invites all aviation enthusiasts and the public to celebrate 100 years of flight.  2003 is the centennial year of the 12-second, 37-meter powered flight achieved by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

The centennial celebration will be held at the Rochester Museum and Science Center on Saturday, April 26, 2003. It will feature daylong events that will include aviation technology and history exhibits, family centered activities, and speakers.  Admission to the museum will give the entire family access to the centennial celebration as well as all of the other museum exhibits.

A special evening program will feature a dinner and a speech by local aviation expert, Professor Kevin Kochersberger, Ph.D.   He is one of 4 pilots training to fly and recreate the Wright Brothers’ feat on December 17, 2003.  He will present materials related to the effort to recreate this flight. Cost for the evening program is $25 per person.
The engineering profession and the world community have been profoundly affected by the development of aviation technology.  We now enjoy the many positive contributions of the aviation industry in our lives.  These benefits are the result of many subsequent innovations from countless men and women throughout the world.  New York’s own son, Glenn Hammond Curtiss, created many of these early innovations in Western New York.

The Rochester ASME Section has organized a program with fourteen other organizations to celebrate this event. The co-participants are:
1.    The Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC)
2.    The Wright Experience
3.    99s, Inc., International Organization of Women Pilots
4.    The Curtiss Museum
5.    The Experimental Aircraft Association
