TOUR OF GENERAL DYNAMICS' NASSCO SHIPYARD

General Dynamics NASSCO has been designing and building ships since 1960, specializing in auxiliary and support ships for the US Navy and oil tankers and dry cargo carriers for commercial markets. NASSCO employs more than 4,000 people and is the only major ship construction yard on the West Coast of the United States.

The shipyard encompasses 80 acres of land and 46 acres of water and offers:
•    2 inclined building ways, 950-feet long and 108-feet wide
•    A 1,000-foot long, 174-foot wide graving dock with a lift capacity of 30,000 long tons
•    An 820-foot long, 136-foot wide floating drydock with an ABS-certified lift capacity of 44,000 long tons
•    8 fully serviced berths ranging from 600 to 1000 feet
•    10 whirley/portal cranes with individual lift capacities up to 300 tons and multi-crane lifts up to 550 tons
•    6 production workshops and 10 assembly areas

There will be a general tour of the shipyard and a more detailed tour of the T-AKE ship assembly.  A presentation by the NASSCO engineering dept is also planned. The T-AKE 1 is a dry cargo/ammunition ship, the lead ship in the Lewis and Clark class. These ships will provide logistic lift from sources of supply either in port or at sea and will transfer cargo that includes ammunition, food, fuel, repair parts, and expendable supplies and material to station ships and other naval warfare forces at sea. The US Navy has awarded NASSCO six contracts for the design and construction of the first nine ships in the T-AKE program with an option for three additional ships which would bring the total contract value to approximately $3.7 billion.
