Subject: Laser Welding--Light Magic Takes on Conventional Welding

(Abstract--Review applications in the automotive, medical, electronics, and jet engine fabrication industries.  Provide information about the main characteristics, advantages, and process limits of laser welding.  Review current status of real time laser equipment and laser weld process monitoring and the relevant ISO technical standards.  Discuss the challenge of the industry regarding training of these new skills to current and future work force.  Question and answer specific technical questions of some of the attendees. )

Speaker: Mr. Simon L. Engel, HDE Technologies, Inc., Elk Grove, CA

(Bio--Mr. Simon L. Engel is the president of HDE Technologies, Inc., a consulting company specializing in industrial laser applications.  Prior to starting HDE Technologies, Inc. in 1998, Simon was the owner and director of HDE Systems, Inc., a contract shop providing R&D and production services in laser-assisted materials processing and abrasive water jet machining.  His experience includes several years at Caterpillar Tractor Company as a Senior Mfg. Engineer (Laser Specialist) and at GTE Sylvania as the Laser Applications Manager.  He received his B.A.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from theUniversity of British Columbia, Canada.  A member of SME, LIA, and AWS, he holds eight patents and has written numerous articles on laser application techniques.  Simon is a member of the AWS Laser Welding Subcommittee and is one of the authors of the new AWS C7.4/C7.4M:2008 Laser Welding Standards.  He has been lecturing at the University of Wisconsin for over 30 years and is currently the Technical Director for the University of Wisconsin –Madison Laser Welding Certificate Program.  Simon brings many years of consulting experience in laser welding to this presentation.  His understanding of the process, the associated documentation, and the training of personnel is gained from many successfully completed assignments for major corporations. )
