TOUR OF A SIKORSKY CH-53 HELICOPTER

A tour of the Poseidon pilot desalination facility is scheduled for March 25, 2009, at 1:45 pm.   If you are interested in attending the tour please email Mark Shin at Shinster1@Yahoo.com with the following information:

  1. Your name.
  2. Your employer and your title.
  3. Your ASME membership number. You must be a current ASME member or be a guest of a member.  Priority will be given to members; guests will be included if space is available.

The seawater desalination pilot plant consists of seawater intake feed pump station, two pretreatment filtration systems configured to operate in parallel, and two reverse osmosis systems.  The seawater demonstration plant also has a potable water sampling station that allows visitors to taste the desalinated water.  The demonstration plant is fully automated and is designed for remote monitoring via the internet.  The pilot facility can produce 30,000 gallons per day.

The ongoing seawater desalination pilot testing study at the Encina power plant confirms the viability of the use of both conventional granular media filtration and membrane filtration for pretreatment of the source water of the full-scale plant planned at this location.  The pilot testing results prove the benefits of using warmer water from power plants in terms of energy savings.  For the site-specific conditions of this project the power cost savings are projected to be 5 to 10 % of the total energy consumption per year.

In recognition of the originality and the value of the work completed at the Carlsbad Seawater Demonstration Facility, theAmerican Academy of Environmental Engineers awarded the project the 2006 Grand Prize for Excellence in Environmental Engineering Research.  This prize is the nation’s premier award for achievement in applied research in the field of water, wastewater, and environmental engineering.

The tour site location is the Encina power plant in Carlsbad.  The address is 4600 Carlsbad Blvd (otherwise known as Highway 1), Carlsbad CA 92008.  Enter through the main entrance on the north side of the power plant (see picture).  The guard will direct you to the parking area.  The tour will last approximately 1 hour.
