Thanks to the volunteers and sponsors, HPS 2004 was successfuly held.   Eight (8) schools entered the contest although EPM (École Polytechnique de Montréal) did not race because their submarine could not clear customs.  A Guiness World Record was set by Virginia Tech for the Fastest 1-person Non-propeller Driven Submarine (Adam Maisano, 3.574 knots)!!

The event organizers (the San Diego Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the San Diego Chapter of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, and High Tech High) express deep gratitude to the entire volunteer team.
All played an important role and contributed to the success of the event.  However, in the webmaster's opinion, Nip Shah was the crucial player.  Without Nip's involvement and leadership, the contest would not have happened.

The contest was open to college and high school teams that can meet the minimum design and safety requirements in accordance with the rules of the contest.

The intent of the contest is to provide an extracurricular activity that will foster a real life engineering opportunity and generate a competitive spirit among young engineers.  The contest will also be recognized in The Guiness Book of Records as a World Speed Record.
