Engineering a New Generation of Drug Delivery Systems

Broadly speaking, the mission of the drug delivery industry is to improve the quality of life for patients by making products that are easier to use, are more effective, or eliminate discomfort. Aradigm Corporation, based in Hayward, CA, is developing two device-based product lines to meet this mission. One is AERx, a sophisticated pulmonary delivery system that allows for a wide range of drugs to be administered via the lungs. The other is Intraject, a needle-free injector that promises to reduce or eliminate the pain associated with injections. An overview of each of these products will be provided, along with some in-depth discussion of key engineering accomplishments.

Speaker: Peter D. Noymer, Ph.D., Aradigm Corporation Peter D. Noymer is a Senior Manager in the Systems Development department at Aradigm Corporation. He has played substantial roles in the development of the AERx system for pulmonary drug delivery and the Intraject needle-free injector. Prior to joining Aradigm, Peter taught and conducted research in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and was the recipient of the department's Professor of the Year award. He holds a B.S.E. degree from Princeton University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all in Mechanical Engineering. He has authored or co-authored more than 20 publications in the areas of heat transfer, spray technology and drug delivery.
