Subject: Dissolution of the Skokie Valley Subsection
Author: W. E. Medcalf, Jr, P.E., Chair
Your Unit Operating Board (the “SVOB”), at the last planning meeting, finalized the decision to request dissolution of the Skokie Valley Subsection, to be effective on 01 July 2009. This decision culminates about five (or more) years of debate and discussion among the several iterations of the SVOB. The decision was not reached easily but is believed to be in the best interest of engineers throughout the Metropolitan Chicago area and especially so for those who belong to the Chicago Section and its “daughter,” the Skokie Valley Subsection.
The following are excerpts from my letter to Bill Bobco, Chair of our parent – the Chicago Section.
“The action, when completed, should reduce the demand on those members currently associated with unit 060330 (Skokie Valley) and actively serving both the Section and Subsection. Further, the ASME members residing north & northwest of Chicago (Skokie Valley) intend to continue, after re-integration, to organize two – occasionally, three – events (tours, technical meetings, PD seminars, etc.) each FY, for the benefit of the Chicago Section and, indeed, all engineers in the metropolitan area. “… “During FY2009, Skokie Valley will continue to operate as a subsection, but in full support of the Chicago section. Skokie Valley is moving forward with plans for at least two technical meetings, a tour, and a professional development series.”
As you will appreciate, the effect on most members of Skokie Valley will be minimal, if any. Keep watching the SV and Chicago websites for further information.
