Elected officers

Officers serve two-rear terms and comprise the unit Executive Committee, which is responsible for providing guidance recommendations to the Operating Board.

Chair
The Chair is responsible for the management of the section.  The chair hosts all meetings of the unit and presides over business meetings of the unit, the operating board, and the executive committee.  The chair also serves, ex-officio, as a member of the Chicago Section Operating Board and such other positions as may, from time to time, be directed.

Vice-chair
The Vice-chair assists the Chair in the performance of all duties, as directed by the Chair.  It is typically expected that the competent Vice-chair will be nominated to ascend to the Chair.

Secretary
The Secretary records the official business of the unit, maintains in good order the records of the proceedings of the unit, and prepares and distributes the minutes of the business meetings of the unit and the operating board.  The Secretary, in concert with the Chair, will assure that notes of the meetings of the executive committee are made and recommendations of the executive committee are brought to the operating board for final decision.

Treasurer
The Treasure has responsibility for the financial management of the unit.  The Treasurer receives all monies, pays all bills due, records and assigns all financial transactions, and prepares, with the guidance of unit management and the operating board, the annual budget and financial report of the unit.

Past Chair
The immediate Past-chair is the advisor to the unit Chair, executive committee, and operating board.

 

Operating Board Committee chairs
Members of the operating board are selected (based on recommendations), appointed by, and serve at the pleasure of the executive committee.  They form the governing body of the unit.  All committee chairs are responsible for the management of the budget they receive and development of budget recommendations for the next fiscal year.

 

Communications
The Communications chair is responsible for dissemination of all information about the unit and the ASME service and recognition of its members  Specific venues for dissemination include, but are not limited to: the unit website; e-mail; postcards; and local media (newspapers, radio, and television).  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist.

Education
The Education chair is responsible for interface between the unit and all levels of education (K-12 and university) within the boundaries of the section.  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist.  Visitations by unit members to K-12 classes to encourage the pursuit of education in science, technology, engineering, and physics (STEP) are a must and are coordinated, tracked, and reported by the Education chair.  Additionally, the Education chair is the liaison between the unit and the engineering faculty and students at Northwestern University, currently the only engineering school within the unit boundaries.

Employment Assistance
The Employment Assistance chair is responsible for providing an interface that aids unit members who are seeking (re-)employment to locate open positions and employers who are seeking seasoned engineers to consider unit members.  The Employment Assistance chair will usually work closely with the website activity of the Communications committee.  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist.

History & Heritage
The History & Heritage chair is responsible for developing and maintaining the history of the unit and coordinating and processing candidates for society designation as “Mechanical Engineering Landmarks.”    The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist.

Honors & Awards
The Honors & Awards chair is responsible for identifying unit members who are deserving of recognition for their contributions to society, the profession, ASME, and the unit and recommending those members to the appropriate authority for the appropriate award.  The Honors & Awards chair may be called upon to act as the Emcee of a unit meeting identifies for the purpose of presenting honors and awards.  The Honors & Awards chair is encouraged to monitor society and professional   awards to unit members and communicate knowledge of those awards to the Communications chair.  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist. 

Industry Relations
The Industry Relations chair is responsible for developing contacts with enterprises employing or otherwise engaging the services of engineers for the purpose of establishing relationships with the unit.  The purposes of such relationship is to: advance service to industry and members; acquaint management with ASME resources; and encourage industry support of unit and ASME educational programs.  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist.
Member Development
The Member Development chair: encourages unit members to remain in ASME; encourages mechanical engineers who are not members to join ASME, works with members and the Professional Development chair to provide skill development opportunities; and monitors and reports the monthly changes of unit membership data.  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist. 

Professional Development
The Professional Development chair identifies and recommends to the operating board, continuing education courses offered outside of the unit and short courses that can be presented at very low cost (<$15 per professional development hour) by the unit.  The chair works with the Communications and Programs chairs to disseminate information regarding such programs.  The chair is encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist.

Program
The Programs chair is responsible for the management of the educational, general, technical, and social meeting meetings sponsored by the unit during the fiscal year.  The meeting schedule, set by action of the unit operating board, will be used as the basis for the direction of this chair.  The program chair will work with the Professional Development chair to assure that “Certificates of Attendance” are available for attendees at all qualifying meetings.  The chair is strongly encouraged to select additional ASME unit members to assist as “Meeting chairs.” 

Meeting chair
A meeting chair will be responsible, under the guidance of the Program chair, for selection of the venue and menu, and for assuring that necessary audio-visual arrangements have been made and fulfilled for a single meeting.  Additionally, the meeting chair will work with the Treasurer to assure that a unit management member, with an additional helper, are available to check in members, receive meeting fee payments, and issue receipts for the meeting.
