April 23, 2013 Dinner Meeting; A Year in Antarctica: What one engineer did

This multi-media presentation covers the experiences of Lieutenant M K Baldwin, Civil Engineer Corps, United States Navy, during her year as the Officer in Charge of the 1990-1991 Winter-Over Detachment McMurdo, Antarctica. Constantly cold and windy, and dark for half of the year, Antarctica is considered one of the harshest climates on Earth. Things that we take for granted here in the U.S. are often extremely challenging in the Antarctic, things like building roads and piers, operating machinery, fighting fires and construction. Come listen and see what it was like on the seventh continent.

This presentation begins with a short description of the continent. The major portion of the presentation is a narrated slide show covering aviation and ship operations, and daily life. Questions from the audience are welcomed during the presentation as well as afterwards. As time permits, additional photos of the surrounding area and wildlife, and video clips from the fire, midwinter medevac, and pier construction are available.

MS. M K "Trina" Baldwin, P.E., C.E.M. entered the Navy in 1984 via the Collegiate Program of the Civil Engineer Corps while completing her Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University. Her tours have included: Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of Construction in Guam; Staff Civil Engineer at Naval Communications Station Sicily; Operations Officer of the Naval Construction Training Center in Gulfport, Mississippi; Officer in Charge of the 1990-1991 Winter-Over Detachment McMurdo of the Naval Support Force, Antarctica; post-graduate education at Georgia Institute of Technology (MSME); Resident Officer in Charge of Construction Okinawa, Japan; NAVFAC Liaison Officer for Headquarters, United States Marine Corps, in Washington, DC; Housing and Energy Action Officer for the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Installations and Environment; Desert Operations Officer at Southwest Division, NAVFAC in San Diego; Deputy Regional Engineer for Commander, US Naval Forces Marianas in Guam; Action Officer for the Strategic Investment Program for Naval District Washington; and Branch Head for Military Construction Appropriations for the Chief of Naval Reserves.

Ms. Baldwin spent five years working for Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure in a variety of assignments, primarily with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (post-disaster work) and the US Navy. In 2010, Ms. Baldwin returned to NAVFAC HQ as the Utilities Privatization and Mobile Utilities Support Equipment Manager and as Acting Utilities Operations Manager.

In 2011, Ms. Baldwin converted from paid employment to full-time volunteer. She is active with American Society of Mechanical Engineers, US FIRST Lego League, tutoring, and other community activities.

Leadership Training Conference (LTC) in St Louis CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is holding its annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC) in St. Louis this year. This is a great opportunity for local ASME members and engineering students to rub elbows with ME's from around the world and tap into the resources of a premier engineering society. The event will go from Thursday afternoon, February 28, to Saturday evening, March 2, 2013.

ASME Member Volunteers will be helping by staffing the Hospitality Table. Student Volunteers help on Thursday evening with setting up posters and helping staff the hospitality table while LTC delegates arrive and check in, or work a shift of a couple hours on Friday or Saturday helping with logistics and evaluation data entry (used to select the Best LTC Presenter Award). In return they may sit in on any LTC sessions they wish and join LTC delegates for breakfast or lunch.

Volunteers will also receive an ASME LTC tee-shirt. Current membership in ASME is not mandatory, but we hope your experience will raise your interest in joining.

Interested ASME Member Volunteers and Student Volunteers, please contact David Wetteroff at the following e-mail address: wetteroffd2@gmail.com.

"An Engineer's View on How to Extend the Lives of Congestive Heart Failure Patients"

Community Presentation Set for Saturday, Feb. 16

SLU Parks Dean Theodosios Alexander, Sc.D. to discuss lifesaving devices

As the leading cause of death in the western world, congestive heart failure is on the top of many Americans' minds. Theodosios Alexander, Sc.D. (a.k.a. Theodosios Korakianitis), Dean of Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at Saint Louis University, has dedicated aspects of his research to changing the way that engineers and doctors think about the treatment of the debilitating disease.

A special community presentation will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the University's Il Monastero, 3050 Olive (east of Compton). The event is free and open to the public, however registration is requested. Parking is available on the lot adjoining the building.

Dean Alexander will address the development of mechanical circulatory support devices. These are pumps designed to prolong the lives of patients suffering from congestive heart failure. He also will review the human heart as a pumping system and discuss his optimal design of the next generation of mechanical circulatory support devices.

Alexander's two devices are designed to address different stages of the disease and are currently under development, the first in London and the second at SLU. Both devices are designed to be installed with minimally invasive surgery and not attached to the heart, unlike current ventricular assist devices (VADs).

The presentation will be followed by a reception, where individuals can speak with Dean Alexander about his life-changing research

Alexander has been awarded the Inventor of the Year Award by the UK National Health Service Innovations Program for his personal research on mechanical circulatory support devices, and actively pursues the development and commercialization of these devices in London and now in St. Louis.

His work is a paradigm shift in cardiac assist devices promising to change medical practices in the field. The outcome of this research has enormous implications for the quality of life of patients, for their caregivers, and financial advantages for the long-term provision of medical care to these patients.

For more information about the event, visit parks.slu.edu. To register, contact Laura Wheeler at 314-977-8447 or by email at wheeler@slu.edu.
